If you’re not aware, on a BMW the passanger side mirror tilts down when you put the car into reverse so you can better see objects on the ground such as lines and things like. I know you might be thinking I don’t park in the lines, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! Now, on my M3 and my 128i before the feature worked no problem; I put the car in reverse and the mirror dips. On the 328i, it doesn’t.
Attached is a screen shot from the owners manual highlighting this feature. I don’t know why it’s not working. The electric mirror itself works fine, and I know the car knows it’s in reverse because my parking sensors come on, but the mirror doesn’t dip. Maybe you had to get a package I didn’t get to have it, or something. As far as I know it’s standard on all US spec BMWs going back to at least the E46.
Anyone have any ideas what’s going on with it?

had this issue a few times. you have to take the mirror out and clean up the contacts. very easy, takes a few minutes.

Sometimes, like when I take the M3 for its annual service.

Might have to try that, the thing is that it works perfectly apart from it not tilting down. Unless you think a dirty contact would cause it not to do that.

Did you flip the switch to adjust the passenger mirror? It only dips when the switch is set to adjust the driver mirror.
(Yes I know your screenshot says this but mentioning just in case.)

I learned that from experience I had in the M3 when I first got it, so I did make sure it was on the drivers side.

yeah mine worked perfectly except for the rear-tilt function. This fixed it.
There are always niggly little issues that spark OCD. I just replaced the steering wheel buttons yesterday because my previous track button stopped working. Not too hard to replace.

Might have to try and do that then.

This is why I don’t like new cars, they pack electronically controlled gizmos in all over the place and eventually they will just stop working. Without that little auto controlled function being used by the car over and over again when you shift into reverse, you could expect that little motor last a lot longer, my 1983 Merc has a passenger side motor and it still works fine. Given the choice I would get an all manual controlled W123, crank windows, sunroof etc.. I remember the BMW ads bragging that they had more computers than the space shuttle, yeah that sounds like a long lasting plan!

Same problem here. As you mentioned, if I manually adjust it downward, it works. That makes me think it’s not a problem with the motor in the mirror. Could be coincedence, but it started after they disabled BMW Assist. Let me know if you find a solution.

This happened in my MB once. This is how I “fixed” it. Place your car in reverse, tilt your mirror down to the same way you had it, set the mirror memory, put your car in park and turn it off. Turn it back on, set the mirror straight again, then you put your car in reverse and see if it tilts down. If so, success! Put it back in drive and save the mirror memory once it straightens back out.

I don’t have mirror memory since my car doesn’t have electric seats.

I think it’s a coincidence, since it still works in my M3. Might have to pop the mirror off and see if it’s a connector. I was going to say it should be pretty clean because I’m pretty sure mine lived in a garage before I got it, but then again I’m pretty sure your M3 has always had a roof over it’s head.

Its either the switch on the mirror adjust or just a glitch with the general module (ZKE or whatever its called). Happened once on the e38. Went away after the next start up.

Sadly, its been like this since I got the car.

I remember on my Pasoft bmw coding software that auto tilt down was a coding option on the general module it was near the remote options for full unlock/lock and windows down/up with remote control. You’re going to have to code it or hire someone with whatever software the e9x uses.

I think it’s coded for it, it’s just broken, and has been broken.

Yeah, it’s been garaged most of it’s life (except when it’s lease was over and it was turned in).

The left/right mirror select switch (the switch above the mirror adjustment pad) must always stay in the left position when not actively adjusting the mirrors. You probably knew that but posting it here because it befuddles a lot of people.

I didn’t know that when I first got my M3, just like that knob between the air vents to change between cold and hot air, but I’ve learned over the years.

does the drivers side work?
if so i would guess it isn’t the switch. could also be just a contact that has a bit of corrosion. If its not too dificult maybe try a bit of emery cloth before replacing components.

Only the passanger side mirror does this.
A couple of people have said it might be a contact or something, worth looking into.

Spot mirrors, problem solved. Works much better than the dipping mirrors. At least for me then always have. Go ahead, give them a shot, you’ll like em.

It’s possible that’s one of those options that a dealer can disable, and a prior owner may have disabled it.

Didn’t think about that, seemly unlikely as there is a built in way to disable it.

Some people really hate it for some reason or another, and I guess moving it to the left is too hard.
